THE HISTORY OF SCBG

SoCal Brussels Griffons was founded as the first club of its kind in Southern California in May of 2012 by Dan Milwood.  The owners of two Brussels Griffons, Dan aimed to bring together fellow Griff enthusiasts and their pups.  Since its founding, the club’s members have gathered at monthly meetups to socialize and make priceless memories with their pups.  The tradition of meetups continued under the stewardship of Ashley Summers, who took over the SCBG in 2015, and continues to bring the Griffs of Southern California together under the leadership of Co-Chairs, Lorena Coto and Viktor Luna.  The success of SCBG has always been made possible by the earnest efforts of many diverse volunteers who all share a connection to this unique and lovable breed.

THE BRUSSELS GRIFFON BREED

Although a small-sized breed that generally weighs 5 to 15 pounds, Brussels Griffons are known for their big personalities! Taking a look into their big, almost human eyes makes lifelong fans of the breed. Griffs come in four colors—red, black-and-reddish-brown (called the Griffon Belge), black and tan, and black—and in smooth coats (called the Petit Brabançon) or rough coats (the Griffon Bruxellois). Their black muzzle and whiskers earned them the nickname “bearded dogs” in old folk songs. Griffs are built thickset and sturdy, and they move with the purposeful trot of a fellow who knows what he wants.

Griffs are alert, sociable, and easily trained. Although playful and energetic, their small size and sensitive nature make them a poor choice as roughhousing playmates for kids. They have a low threshold for loneliness and will stick close to their special human, providing years of love and companionship.
